The importance of words and what is the value of vocabulary?
Do you know that something simple as the right choice of words, can significantly determine the outcome of your life? Imagine knowing only three terms for something as simple as pizza. How and what will you order at a restaurant?
Why did we start this story about the importance of words?
Think of someone saying: I didn’t get to the meeting on time because of an accident. Depending on their own experiences, people may think of a car, bicycle, or work accident.
Have you ever thought it could mean an accident where you spill a cup of coffee over your laptop? Or you broke a glass and have to pick up the shards?
Think that what happens on the outside, called reality by us, is different for everyone.
Depending on our own experiences, our senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell), beliefs, values, or traumas, we perceive reality in a certain way and form a mental representation of reality.
In NLP, we say that
“the map is not the territory.”
What we construct in our mind is only a representation, a map.
Moreover, according to our vocabulary, we describe that mental representation in a certain way. Here is where the importance of words matters. A person with 10 000 words in his vocabulary will have a completely different expression than a person with only 2000.
Not to mention that the other person has the same filters(experience, senses, beliefs) that influence communication and results. In addition, depending on the culture, nouns can have different genders. This means an extra filter. If in French(“le pont“), Italian(“il ponte“) or Romanian(“podul“), a simple word like the bridge is masculine, but in German language, it is feminine(“die Brücke“).
In French, Italian, and Romanian, you can say that a bridge is safe and solid, specifically masculine qualities. While in German, you can say about the same bridge that is flexible, curved, and can bend.
Interesting, isn’t it? Now you understand the importance of words?
Now that I have briefly told you that words represent our mental representations of reality, the importance of words, of choosing the right ones when we use in transmitting information is more evident.
